The opportunity to get a great young QB with some experience is too good to pass on and would have given this team a chance to win right now. Without good QB play, the chances of winning anything significant in the NFL is rarely there for any team.
Even with a good offseason early on, the team is now farther from a division title and playoff berth. Chicago is going to be a strong contender each season with this move. Minnesota has a great team, but until they get a good QB, they will struggle to get very far in the playoffs. Green Bay has a good young QB, and with an improved defense they will be tough.
With the offseason moves made already, and a solid draft, this team will still win just a few games a year for some time now. Another Cutler type opportunity will likely not come along. Culpepper seems a poor option given his past 4 seasons of futility. Cutler would have put the Loins in the competition right away. None of the picks the team has kept will help them as much as he would have, IMHO. Even if they draft a QB at #1 and he has talent, it will take time for him to gain experience. With the team's 50+ years of QB futility - especially in the draft - what are the chances they will get it right this time? For decades this team has had a weakness at the most important position in football, and it has cost them greatly. Once again, that is true and will be for some time to come I fear.
I am bummed, big-time! Maybe many of you have time to wait it out. That is not as likely a scenario for me.
