I actually like a couple of MLBs who will be available in the 2-3rd rounds. I don't like Laurinitis. He's disciplined but is more finesse than I like for Schwartz/Cunningham's defense.
Rey Maualuga is the prototypical Schwartz MLB, but I have doubts he would be available at #20. I think Curry is going to be a STUD though. He's 255 pounds of smart and physical thumping power, that runs a 4.56 40. He's faster than most of the RBs who are coming into the league this year. I don't think you can go wrong with him at MLB or OLB.
The only thing good I can say about Stafford is that he seems to really love football. He's a plastic personality, so I don't see him being a great leader. He has shown flashes of greatness, but he has never been great.
I think Jason Smith or Aaron Curry have a higher upside, contrary to the talking heads I've heard talking. I actually still think Andre Smith is the best OT, but his behavior has been far too erratic. Cincinnati will get a great OT. I actually think Eugene Monroe is better than Jason Smith, but you have to believe that his knee is going to be good enough for 5-6 years to make him worth taking #1.
I hate taking QB in the top 10, especially the way the draft money gets distributed and the fact that few QBs are ready to start immediately. I think Sanchez is actually a safer pick at QB than Stafford, because he has the right personality for QB and his physical skills are just as good as most starting QBs in the NFL. Sanchez is going to be a 1-2 yr project so I don't think he's worth a top 10 pick. Stafford is also a 1 yr project because he comes from a pro-style, but elementary level pro-style. And he isn't as football smart as Sanchez.
One more year of me hating a first round Lion pick, what's new? But I'll give whoever the same support that I gave Harrington, McMahon, Kitna, etc. However, I think the Lions are setting themselves up for a QB controversy in 2010, and that has never been a good situation in Detroit (or anywhere else that I can think of).
The Lions still need: 2 MLBs (1 starter, 1 backup), #1 TE, #2 RB (more of a change of pace RB, but somebody better than Mo Morris, wouldn't hurt), #1 OG/#2 OC (I would take one of three OCs and play them at OG), rotational DT (NT-run stuffing 300+ pounds), FS/CB/KR, #2 RDE, #2 QB. How many of these can they fill with draft picks? I think optimally they can still take care of 5 of them even if they take Stafford #1. It just makes it more difficult. And if they take Stafford they'll still need a viable veteran #2 QB, and means that Stanton is probably gone. Henson is fodder. I'm disappointed they haven't taken care of that backup vet position already. We're down to JP Losman and Rex "Gag-me" Grossman as veterans available. Sad.
