Although Pettigrew should help both the running game and passing attack some, new head coach Schwartz seems to have already forgotten two basic football tenets he knew before coming to Detroit - blocking and tackling at the line of scrimmage make everything else work - or fail to work! Let's see... We have a young QB we cannot protect and no improvement in the running game (BLOCKERS), and we cannot pressure the other team's QBs or stop their running games (TACKLERS). Now, with all the talented linemen and linebackers gone, maybe they will draft a couple? Nothing appears to have changed to these old eyes.
There is still a weak OL, a weak DL, and no middle LB. They could have gotten help in all three areas already if they had chosen to draft for talent AND need. Instead, they are saying they will not sway from the plan in place. None of the players drafted on day one are losers, all have talent and are highly regarded at their respective positions. I am unimpressed with all three picks for THIS 0-16 team, however.
I do have questions that the Loins may well think are unimportant. First, have they checked out Stafford's ability to throw accurate passes while being knocked to the ground repeatedly? Sceond, can a safety hitting players hard 10 yards past the line of scrimmage help stop the other offense on third and short? Third, will the new TE be an important receiving threat while lining up next to Backus in order to afford some throwing time on third downs?
Unless the new regime can find talented starters at OL, DL, and MLB on day two, this draft will likely be viewed as a complete bust to me. Defense wins championships, but the Loins were the very worst NFL team on that side of the ball in 2008. FAs have upgraded the defense some, but yesterday they failed to follow those moves up and really improve this group. I guess one requirement for anyone hired by this organization is to check the football experience and knowledge at the door and not use any of it. The ghosts of GMs past seemed to have helped Mayhew continue inept drafting on day one. The curse continues.
