With the Chiefs moving from a 4-3 scheme to a 3-4, McBride was trying to make the transition from defensive end to outside linebacker for the Chiefs. To help with the transition, he went from 278 pounds to 255 pounds.
The Lions want McBride to go back to playing defensive end and have asked him to regain most of the weight he lost.
"I probably want to stay out of the McDonalds area," McBride said. "The weight I do want to gain I want it to be a good weight, not fast food weight. I'm just going to try to drink a little more protein and take some shakes and things like that."
McBride steadily is gaining the weight and his adjustment to the Lions' 4-3 hasn't been too difficult. He started nine games for Detroit defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham in Kansas City before going on injured reserve last season.
"My disappointment is they took so much weight off him," Cunningham said. "But he'll gain that weight back and I think he's a good player."
Considering McBride's speed -- 4.8 40-yard dash at 278 pounds at the combine -- he could be a great rusher on the edge.
