I was thinking just now how long it has been since I've rooted for a comparable team. The '85 team was more solid on defense. But as good as Herman Moore & Barry Sanders were together, Stafford & CJ together are better. When they actually get LeShoure (and have Best playing the Darren Sproles role) back at RB, it could be incredible.
But the d-line cannot do it by themselves. The defense is out of balance. The Saints only had to go to the 3-step drop and get the ball out quickly. Plus, as you all know Suh wasn't as good as last year. The shoulder surgery was under-played in the off-season and I think he wasn't ready to start the season physically. But Suh has a fire in his belly. So I think he comes back next season with a chip on his shoulder and works hard during this off-season to be dominant again.
LBs need to get better at tackling...or at least find some backups who can push them. They were much improved from last year, though, and I believe that the TE is no longer one of the Lions' Achilles heels. But the runs up the middle...ouch.
Secondary needs a lot of Mayhew-ing. Delmas needs a backup and a cohort. Spievey was so up and down I have started doubting he is going to get it. I think he actually got worse as the season wore on and his backup/challenger was hurt. Eric Wright might be good in a different system...but maybe he should move to safety. I don't see him as a #2 CB. Maybe he would be okay as a nickel. I don't see him as a Lion, nonetheless.
On the other hand, Houston had his best year and showed he's a borderline #1 CB when healthy. If the Lions can add another CB of his caliber they would be much harder to go up against, plus they need Aaron Berry to learn how to turn his head and look for the ball...or at least appear to look for it.
Then there's DE. I really believe Cliff is going to follow the money ... and not be as successful as he was in Gun's scheme. Actually, Willie Young has me excited to see what he's got. I like Cliff but I don't think he's going to fit under the cap.
Then they can address the o-line. Peterman must go. Backus' biceps injury is a worry but also means another team probably isn't going to throw huge money at him. The cap is going to be tight and may mean that free agency is quieter than last year. But don't hold me to that because I don't understand all the mechinations with contracts.
Anyway, here is to next year and another smart draft and free agent period. Mayhew will be earning his money this year.
