If you are doing a breeding using frozen semen anytime after next week with a date of whelp after the new year this applies to you.
It will now be possible for co-owners to prevent you from providing stud service with frozen semen or even using it on your own b###hes !!
Do you co-own a stud ?
If so are you still on good terms with the stud co-owners ?
In cases of very old co-ownerships.. do you still know how to reach them all ?
Do you own a b###h about to be bred to frozen from a stud who is co-owned ?
Better take care to view the studs AKC certificate to see just who owns part of the dog. Make sure that ALL stud owners sign the stud service contract. And while you are at it make sure you get a copy of the stud dogs AKC DNA certificate. This is also covered in the rule changes.
As they say in the breed " Spit Happens " . People divorce. People move away. People die. Under certain unpleasant circumstances breeders/co-owners must take back dogs. And sadly yes even the best long term friendships can fall apart. And this is where things can get ugly and expensive if you need negotiate for a signature.
I co-own several males. Until recently this included one where I am no longer on speaking terms with the co-owners. When I read the below info in the AKC minutes, I picked up the phone and called AKC. Could this couple possibly prevent me from using my own stud ? Their response to me was " YES this is why we discourage co-ownerships " followed by " we do not mediate contract disputes "I immediately put an offer on the table to buy out the co-owners of the dog. Thankfully they accepted the offer and I now own my dog outright again.
The only way I see around this is to have the frozen litter registration applications signed by the co-owners at the time of collection and freezing.
Example : If the collection nets 6 frozen breedings get 6 forms signed immediately and keep them in a safe place.

FROM THE AKC BOARD MEETING MINUTES AUGUST 2009 ( REPORTED ON PAGE 9 )
VERY IMPORTANT ... NOTICE THE LAST CLAUSE REQUIRING ALL STUD OWNERS TO NOW SIGN FOR FROZEN SEMEN BREEDINGS.
Frozen Semen Storage Facility Approval
There was a motion by Dr. Battaglia, seconded by Mr. Menaker, and it was VOTED (unanimously) that effective January 1, 2010, AKC will discontinue the procedure that requires any facility that collects or stores frozen semen be approved by the AKC prior to the AKC accepting applications for litters produced by the semen stored at the facility. The revised
Section XI.C. of the AKC Procedures for Registration Matters to read as follows:
The American Kennel Club will consider an application to register a litter resulting from the artificial insemination of the b###h using frozen semen, provided the litter is, in all other respects, eligible for registration and thefollowing conditions are met:
1. The collection of semen for the artificial breeding
must have been reported to the AKC on the AKC
Frozen Semen Collection Statement form. If the
Semen was collected after October 1, 1998, the
sire must be AKC DNA Profiled.
2. The collector/storer must be on record with the
AKC as familiar with and complying with the
AKC regulations for record keeping and identification of dogs.
3. The frozen semen application form must be submitted
containing the certifications completed by
The owner of the semen, the owner of the dam
and the veterinarian who performed the artificial
breeding, together with the proper fee.
4. All sire owners must sign the form transferring
ownership of the frozen semen.
