Hi Tom,
I need to do more testing when time permits, but using George's technique, I found I could determine silver and copper items from most iron objects and I believe this will work to near maximum depth capabilities. What I haven't done is to try it somewhere to see just how well it does in a park. I still need to do that when time permits. So, to answer your question as well as I can at this time, it won't be perfect but the unit appears it should work quite well and minimize the digging of iron when looking for silver or copper objects. Near surface objects are a little strange because they cause or create a confusing signal. Raising the coil a little eliminates this problem and makes determining the target easier, so the system isn't perfect. Air tests and controlled buried tests indicate this should work fine.
Now, keep in mind that the signals on a dime at 12" or so are not ear blaster type responses but are not minimal whispers either. Also, this depth capability does vary with the GB setting somewhat.
Now, I compressed the GB control when I made it cover a wider range, which does make it more difficult to separate a penny from a dime. The high conductor cutoff is still about 10 am on the control, but it is tighter.
The expansion of the control provides a better overall control of the detector to best match the ground conditions for maximum depth.
Unfortunately, this adjustment also alters the ID portion at this time. The visual ID I am thinking about using should reduce or minimize that problem and allow for a separate ID function from the GB. This new ID signal could be used to set the tone also if desired.
I should have had this done some time back but I got sidetracked with another idea that didn't work quite as planned. That happens in this game.
