The nice thing is there is a tone change between low and high conductors, so under normal operations, silver, copper and other high conductors will cause a low tone while all iron objects and low conductors such as foil, lead, gold, etc with cause a high tone.
So, yes, a person could easily tell the higher conductive items such as silver and copper objects from things such as foil, iron, lead, etc. Unfortunately, most gold objects fall in that low conductor catagory also. The difficulty is separating out the gold from the rest. This is what most nugget hunters are wanting.
