Hi Tom,
I missed this one so I am answering it now. Yes, if you set the GB level right you can get a negative (low tone)response on high conductors and all other objects or at least most of them will generate a high tone. So, you can distinguish foil, iron junk, lead, and, unfortunately, most smaller gold.
I am not sure just what it will take in the long run, but I think the form of ID will be reliable enough that you will be able to tell the high conductors and separate them, as well as give a guy a good idea of much of the other junk.
As for trying to separate out the gold from the other items, that can't be easily done. Most iron junk can be determined, but tin can type metal is the problem metal. I have been able to distinguish it on my low powered PI, but I still need to make some changes to be able to do it on the GS 5.
