Hi Rick,
For starters, you can check out the following site.
http://www.golddetector.info/
This is another discriminating PI that I hope will be available in the near future. This unit is designed by Allen Westersten which has been discussed at least on other forums. I don't remember if it has been discussed at length on this forum or not. Allen has a couple of patents plus a couple pending that relate to this detector and other associated designs.
This unit is mainly aimed at allowing the operator to ignore iron objects while searching for gold. So, the discriminating feature is limited to that aspect as far as I know.
Right now, he is also a one man band and is concentrating on an important medical project rather than the detector. As he mentioned, his medical design could save lives, which is more important. So, I can't say as to when this unit might be available.
Yes, Eric has something new up his sleeve. I have been hounding him to bring it out for a long time. Only Eric can answer the questions, if and when.
As for overall improvements to present and future designs, this last year or so has seen some rather dramatic changes that most people can't see. It is the behind the scenes improvements in preamps, filtering, etc that advance the capabilities of the detectors available now or soon to be available.
As for George Payne, he did elude to a possible new project some time back in an email, but only he can answer regarding any details.
Now, Whites has been totally mum on their new PI design. So, anything you have heard has not come from any Whites personnel that I know of. I personally can't say what their new unit will do or not do. I was hoping to be able to get a loaner to test and maybe compare their unit to others, but only time will tell if that will happen. Since I have more PI's than I can ever use right now, I can't justify buying one just to compare it.
On the other side of the coin, I have been very open with my ideas and improvements in hopes they elect to incorporate some or all of them. I really do want them to succeed. We could really use a well made US PI that can be used for gold hunting.
What is interesting about new detectors and their capabilities is just how they are used and by whom. We hear very little about the GS 5 and what little is mentioned on some of the forums has been criticism mainly because of some early weaknesses.
However, there are a couple of people such as George Baker and at least one more (George K.) who have taken the time to actually learn the GS 5 thoroughly. These people have figured out how to expand the possibilities of this detector far beyond what was originally intended. Their feedback is and has been extremely important in the further development of this PI and other similar detectors.
So, it is not just the designers that are responsible for some of the latest changes, but also the users who are willing to take the time to truly learn all they can about the detector they are using. I know I have benefited from the information provided by George.
