You're right, The newer (Back box) Auto Legend did suffer criticism from users who had become accustomed with the older green box 77B Automatic.
Mainly for two reasons...
First, The Audio Volume on the newer black box is not as loud as the older 77B Automatic....Signals jump out loud and clear with the older 77B Automatic, Very noticeable when switching over from the older 77B Automatic to the newer 77 Auto Legend.
Second, Quality control....The New version 77 Auto legend suffered a wide variance of performance between models, Some had better performance and better stability. While others had poor performance or poor stability when increasing sensitivity.
Quality on the Components varied from one circuit board to the other, Some had components made right while others had poorly made components.
However, If a user can find one of the well made 77 Auto Legend's, They will find it to be a very good 100 kHz detector and not even notice the faults the other 77 Auto Legend's had with poor quality made components...Both are about equal on performance and stability if one can find a good well made 77 Auto Legend.
