Hi Tom,
Yes, One of my local friends (Mark) told me you were going to help the police search for a bullet...If possible and the police are willing to allow you another crack at locating the spent bullet please include me in the search, On vacation this week and have two Compass Auto versions (77 Legend & older Automatic).
You once owned one of those well made Auto Legends, The one you gave me
.....The unit you gave me had a bad coil, Sure it worked but the coil was not properly adjusted with the unit when you first gave the detector to me and the coil was a bad coil to start with even after the making adjustments.
I tinkered with the two miniature trimmer pots inside the coil and this helped allot but you can only do so much with a bad coil, Two years later finally called Keith Wills and bought a good Auto Legend coil.
Uneven terrain or mineralized soil are the 77B's enemy, As you seen searching for the spent bullet. The auto versions would have fared better with both stability and better recovery results, Let me know if the police will allow another hunt for the spent bullet as I'm on vacation.
