I think a better explanation would be this new coil design works well for both large and small objects.
Generally, when trying to find small objects a smaller coil works better.
When trying to find larger objects deeper, then a larger coil works better.
So, if you design a special coil that has both a small coil winding and a large coil winding in the same housing and these two coil windings are working together at the same time, then this new coil will work very well for all conditions.
I think that is what is being said but using fancier terms. Keep in mind that I am guessing but I think I am right.
