It is my understanding both windings are active or energized at the same time.
Normally, a 12" coil doesn't do well at detecting very small objects at any depth, but a smaller coils such as a 6" one does. The bigger coil does much better at detecting larger objects deeper than what can be detected with a small coil. So, by having two active size coil windings in one housing a person can detect both small items at reasonable depths and larger objects deeper than could be normally done with the small coil size only.
