Hi Rick,
About the only place I have ever tried a detector in Michigan was in Cadillac and the ground was so neutral there, anything would have worked. At least, it would have where I tried the detector.
My guess is you will be able to obtain about the same in a buried test as you can in an air test if the ground is as mild as I found it to be.
As far as the depth on a quarter, this will depend upon the various settings, but I am guessing that maybe a foot or so would be reasonable, probably more at the right settings and in areas with low electrical noises.
I have found the PI seems to do better at detecting good objects when near nails than I have done with a VLF. Just how much better depends upon a lot of factors such as the size and quantity of nails, as well as the depth of the nails as it relates to the depth of the coin. So, there is no easy answer to this one.
My guess is which ever has the strongest signal will prevail. So, if the settings are such that the nail generates almost no response, then you will be able to detect the quarter much deeper than if you have a strong rejection of the nails.
I hope this makes sense.
Reg
