Hi Tom,
With a switch to select a single tone, you will only hear objects that create that tone type signal. Any target that causes the opposite tone will not cause a loud signal, but you will hear the audio threshold shut off, so you do hear a reduction in the threshold. At least that is what it does on my PI. I can't say just what Whites will have since there are different methods of eliminating the opposite tone. I just preferred to be able to hear when a bad target was there.
So, basically, there is no need to adjust the delay. Just lower the threshold and you basically hear nothing at all when going over tinfoil, small staples, small lead shot, nails, and other ferrous if the tone switch is properly selected. You will get a distinct audible signal from objects that make the other tone such as coins, copper objects, some larger gold rings or coins, larger gold nuggets, or other higher conductive objects.
At least, that is what my PI does.
I will say Eric and I had discussions about making it so absolutely nothing would be heard when going over something that normally would make the opposite tone. In other words, it is possible to eliminate a tone and not hear the "hole" or shutoff of the opposite tone. In this case, one wouldn't even know they had passed over junk.
I am from the old school where I am accustomed to hearing the "junk" signal, so I preferred to know when I passed over something that would shut off the audio. This way if I got a strange signal, hearing the shutoff would help me evaluate the strange sounds.
