Hi Carl,
I don't know if the LED's will be on the new unit but I can say that my modified GS 5 should have something similar that is easy to see. I have found the detector will appear to work well but will suffer both depth loss and ability to separate targets if the battery voltage drops sufficiently. So, now, when in doubt, I change batteries.
As for a smaller coil, lets hope Whites does have a smaller coil available. If not, keep in mind it is not impossible to build your own coil. It is much easier to build one for a PI than for a VLF.
Now, before I began to use the single tone setup. I found the coil size and shape to make a difference in the ability to discriminate targets. It was much more difficult to use a smaller elliptical coil I made using one of Bill Hays coil forms, the 9 3/4" by 4 3/4" size. The single tone technique seemed to minimize some of the problems I encountered from changing coil.
Finally, George Kinsey indicated there were differences between the Whites and the GS 5. One of the reasons the GS 5 works so well is the particular design that eliminates the negative half of the initial signal using a special circuit. I just hope the design differences between the two detectors is such that this portion isn't changed. It is my opinion that the key to the GS 5 single tone feature and how well it works is largely because of this special feature.
