New Technology often causes stable situations to get confusing and can provoke disagreement. PI detectors with discrimination are an an example.
We have lots of folks who contribute here who have never used a PI detector (like me - until 10 days ago) and others who have used PI nugget machines like the Minelabs or various PI beach machines. These same folks have invested hundreds or thousands of hours in learning how to use a huge variety of VLF machines to hunt for every type of target in every possible kind of site.
Along comes the Pulse Devil (or more correctly along doesn't come the Pulse Devil), the GS5, the Infinium and now the TDI and we all wonder - what does this mean for the hobby, for my favorite kind of hunting, for the sites I have access to and for me?
There are (I'm guessing now) maybe 30 people who actually have a TDI to use in the field (I don't count unsold units on dealer or distributor shelves). Most of these folks have had their detectors only a few weeks or less and haven't posted much in the way of detailed results, even on White's closed TDI Forum. Anyone who wants specific data on how the TDI would work for them is probably going to have to wait for a while or get their hands on a TDI and try it.
There was a really interesting discussion here in March 06 about how long you need to give a new machine before you give up on it. The only comment I'd add is that the discriminating PI is SO DIFFERENT from any VLF that even the most experienced VLF users will have to be willing to put in more time than they would normally allow to come to grips with it.

By the way - If you've never tried it, there is an excellent search facility for this forum. Just click on "Archives" and then choose between Google or Yahoo site search. It doesn't include the 3 pages of the Current Forum.
Lastly, I'd like to apologize to Paul_in_CA for my immoderate language in my post of July 16th - it was uncalled for.
