Rick I understand he will be using the detector in the UK? Thus, it may be in his best interest to wait and deal with a local UK store. Thus, he will be in the "loop" so as to speak through buying locally and solving any "warranty and service propblems" and most importantly he will likely establish needed informational and tip contacts with the sales person and even with friendly customers.
In the meantime while he is stateside you could help him in learning the basics as likely you have several detectors... maybe later when he is established in the UK he will invite you to spend time with him not only hunting the beach for mostly(?) recent drops; but also hunting a plowed field for "hammered" coins...
