Thanks for the advice. I figured at this point a gold detector is science fiction, but at some point it's got to be do-able. It's funny how certain technologies are screaming forward (computers being the most obvious), while others seem to be going nowhere. If I go back to 1980 in my mind and look forward to 2009 I see technology way more advanced then it's become. It seems to me that a gold detector ought to exist by 2009, and yet here we are and there are none.
Me and my family have looked all over for the rings. Could he have done something crazy and stuck them inside a VHS tape? I guess that is possible, and if so it would be long gone by now. All we know for sure is that his sister asked him about the rings about a month before he died and he said they are in a safe place. We all knew he was dying, if I had known he had hidden them well I would have simply asked him where they are and I am sure he would have told me. I had no idea he would have stashed them some place where we could never find them. The rings were very ornamental and were loaded with rare gems, and were probably 80-100 years old. They belonged to my grandmother. My aunt thinks they are worth a combined $10,000 or more.
And you're right, there is way too much metal in the house for a metal detector to find them.
