Quite often old desks, tables and cabinets had hidden cubbies, maybe several. Could be something like a piece of wall trim that removes or in a light fixture. A loose newel post on a stair rail. Behind the medicine cabinet. If his belongings have been dispersed, I guess there's no telling if he hid it in an object or in the home itself.
Do you know anyone who works in drug enforcement? I bet they know all the common hidey holes.
Quite a few modern detectors give signals an ID number. Gold would read different from iron or copper. It would still be a difficult search with many false signals. I'd think it would be worth a try. It's possible the rings were placed in some common metal tin or other container. The detector could only ID the container and not its contents. The detector could more easily search the yard and outbuildings which probably don't have finished interiors. And it could always be sold or kept for coinshooting as a hobby.
