I do have the Advantage Pro and I agree that the DISC does not affect depth (and depth it has! ) but, it will not give you a good signal on the med sized iron relics. It will “ID” iron but it's all staccato except for the largest iron items. If you are going through and area with heavy amounts of square nails and med iron you are bombarded with staccato. Now put a good target near iron and the good target sounds like the last part of the Staccato in one direction and a good signal in the other. This is completely typical of response from most units with iron alone. So while it does “ID” that iron is present it does not allow me to discriminate the SIZE of a piece of Iron "OUT" (NULL) or "IN"(non-Staccato good solid signal)
The only ones I’ve try that are close to doing that are the Whites Classic/ID series but they do suffer from the typical DISC Depth and incidental Lowest conductors being Disc'd out along with the MED sized iron. I.e. the higher the DISC, the lower the Depth.
The Excalibur that I use will NULL on Iron of every SIZE without any use of the Discrimination and, has no effect on depth of other Non-Iron targets so it can definitely be a function in the circuitry that is separate from the non-iron disc circuit. As a result, why not have a second Discrimination pot that allows the users to decide what size or signal strength of iron to NULL on or give a Good Tone signal on. Is there really no unit from Minelab or Whites or anyone else able to do this yet?
IE example Settings:
A) Iron DISC #1 Set at 1 = all Iron: Good Tone
Non-Ferrous DISC #2 Set at 1 = all non-Iron targets: Good Tone
B) Iron DISC #1 Set at 3 = nails, all med to larger iron give Good Tone
Non-Ferrous DISC #2 Set at 1 = all non-ferrous targets Good Tone
C) Iron DISC #1 Set at 6 = small-med size iron NULL, Large axe heads Good Tone
Non-Ferrous DISC #2 set at 1= all non ferrous targets Good Tone
D) Iron DISC #1 Set at 10 = All Iron NULL (like Sov’s + Excalibur)
Non-Ferrous #2 Disc set at 1 all non-ferrous Targets Goood Tone)
A separate Iron DISC that Does not Affect the Disc range or Depth of the non ferrous targets… Just take the Sov and put a second DISC control only for Iron.
Maybe I need to go High Tech. What the capabilities of the F75, Explorer and, Spectrum?
