Yes, the 1270 had two seperate discrimination knobs, one just for the iron range and one for all other metals. A toggle switch let you pick which disc. mode you wanted to hunt in and click back to the other along with an all metal mode. The silencer switch I never saw much difference whether on or off. In fact it seemed to work better off..But the 1236 X had a very good iron disc. with the silencer on and picked thru iron better than the 1270 but not nearly as deep and did not have the two disc. circuits like the 1270..The problem with both these detectors for me was the preset ground balance. In my ground you have to have adjustable ground balance. The 1270 had manual ground balance in the all metal mode but not in disc. mode. In good ground the 1270 would be a good relic hunter for picking thru "sizes" of iron targets. But the Minelab Advantage is the best I've found for seeing deep targets thru the bad ground. By keeping the iron mineralizaton balanced at the right level I can ignore the nail & wire pieces & iron "static" and still get good signals on golf ball size pieces of shell fragments on up thru whole shells, bayonets, and large iron..If I was in good ground I would go with the Compass for picking thru sizes of iron. The XP pro plus and Gold Scanner Pro would both knock out increasing sizes of iron as you turned up the disc. and would not knock out other metals until all iron had been eliminated. I could turn up disc. until an axe head had been knocked out and it would still pick up buttons & lead.......
