Detecting is not without it's risks. I read this story and thought about the last time I lake hunted about 3 weeks ago. While the boy here was swimming, stuff happens. I should know. As a boy I was one of the last people to get polio before Jonas Salk discovered the vaccine. For those of you old enough to remember, polio was a scourge of summer thought to be transmitted while swimming in lakes.
It doesn't take more than a tiny break in your skin to get infected with anything. As science fights to keep a step ahead of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria, the fact is everyone should think about stuff they're doing. I never detect without gloves. Too many sharp objects hinding in that hole. I never beach hunt in bare feet for the same reason.
I'm not trying to scare people with this post but just remind them that parks are full of pet feces, lakes can have high bacterial counts in the summer and keeping your tetanus booster current isn't a bad idea if you think about it.
