Hi Rick,
Out of the detectors you mentioned the Vision/V3 would be the best suited detector for thin gold chains, And as you noticed the V-3 gets thin gold chain in prospecting mode.......Plus, If the V-3 is having problems handling Virginia Beach or any other beach for that matter while using prospecting mode increase the SAT speed and/or adjust the filters....Program the V-3 so iron signals some in with a different tone....A two tone prospecting mode setup is what you need, You'll never go back to using disc or relic mode when searching for gold chains.
Too many detectorist overlook prospecting mode, it's the best mode for gold chains and other thin/tiny gold jewelry targets. Plus, In tough ground the prospecting mode handles harsh soil better over disc or relic mode. Less masking, faster threshold (SAT) recovery allowing you hear the faintest signals that would otherwise be completely missed or in bad ground situations (masked out) using disc or relic mode..
(Big foot) I'm not much of a big foot fan and prefer the elliptical 6X10 DD coil, Gets good coverage, excellent depth and still sensitive on smaller targets including gold chains. Plus, It helps the detector handle tough ground.
(Pin-pointer) I see you mentioned having the Pistol probe below on this same thread, Pistol Probe is a Pi operating at 15uS so it's not really designed for getting tiny targets, It does punch a deep signal into the ground for everything else though and depending on soil coiditions you may need to make a quick adjustment on the delay for smooth threshold operation...I have a Pistol probe and other pin-pointers, But mainly use them for inland detecting not for beach use.
Good luck,
Paul (Ca)
