I've used mine at the beach and I can tell beer bottle caps and nails/tent pegs, etc. from aluminum, gold and coins. Sadly nothing I know of will discriminate aluminum from gold.

Reg Sniff has had very good results looking for coins with it and ignoring all low conductors including nails, bottle caps and (probably) small gold jewelry. He has posted results here which you could search for in the archives.
