Hi,
I own both the TDI and the V3. The V3 would be an alternative to the E-Trac for your described uses.
The TDI is a pulse induction (PI) detector. In general these are dig-it-all units. However, the TDI is a complex unit that in the right hands can do some neat tricks. But unless you are thoroughly versed in the realm of PI detectors the TDI is probably not what you are looking for.
I'm liking the V3. I won't get into the depth thing as I think that White's and Minelab both make capable units. They each have a way of doing things that tends to appeal to different groups of people. I am a big Minelab fan but I've simply never felt comfortable with the entire Explorer series of units. Not saying they are not great units, just that I seem to take to the White's units more readily. I think being comfortable with a detector is a really important part of how successful a person will be with it and so I just go with what feels right to me. A whole other bunch of people would feel just the opposite. Best bet if possible is to lay hands on both a V3 and an E-Trac before buying.
