As Steve says, the V3 is meant to be a coin/relic machine. The TDI is more of a prospecting/beach type machine. So in some ways, the goals of each is diametrically opposed. A nugget or beach (jewelry) guy WANTS to hear every little birdshot, push-pin, etc... (in his quest for the littlest nuggets, littlest earing studs, etc...). But a relic/coin coin might NOT want to hear every single staple, birdshot, nail, etc...
Yes the TDI has some tricks up its sleeve to tell low verses high verses iron. But it's not designed from the get-go for that. To the extent that you may be able to pass iron (or surface foil etc...) in a park with a TDI, you may end up getting only the depth that the V3 would've given you, to attain that level of TID. So if land hunting in junky sites is your destination, you may just end up asking yourself why you didn't get a coin/relic machine to begin with. It all just depends on how much patience you have, what type sites you're gonna hunt, etc...
