Hello Peter,
It takes a while understanding the Mark 1 target select feature, You will pick up some quick setup tricks along the way but try to follow the basic instructions at the beginning.
Plus, You know the old saying (if you don't use it you loose it) which applies with Target select, One can easily forget how to use the Mark 1 Target select if they don't use it often
Rather than adjust the regular disc past the usual accept range, Set it at the setting you plan to use. This will eliminate you readjusting it later after you have adjusted the target select notch....Your approach does not effect it's performance it just adds extra work making the readjustment, Keep it simple.
I agree with you when adjusting Notch, Rather than use the meter's ID for adjusting the notch toss a coin or the desired (accept) target on the ground, or you can even adjust the desired target by air test. What the meter can do is quickly get you to the desired notching level and from there you can continue to fine tune it holding the toggle switch to the right waving a coin across the coil or as you said placing the target on the ground and sweeping the coil for the final adjustment.
Sounds like you're in a whole lot of fun with the Mark 1, It's a machine everyone should have especially coin shooters.
