Hi Steve,
First, most people or companies for that matter have not heard of the PPD1 since the production level was quite small as far as I can determine. To make matters worse, there are not that many people who fully understand PI designs so trying to understand or modify the PPD1 would be a challenge even if they had ever heard of the unit.
This is further compounded by the fact the schematic for the PPD1 is quite complicated thus making it even harder to try to modify. So, even with full knowledge of the concept, it would be a good task to say the least. On the upside, I have confidence it can be done.
Keep in mind that it took many years for any US company to introduce a high power PI and even that one was heavily influenced by the the design engineer who designed the base unit. This only happened a couple of years ago. So, wondering why no one advanced the PPD1, when most people had never heard of it, would be highly unlikely.
Now, the PPD1 was a unit built before the days of the internet so it quietly came and left with little fanfare. Most people, including myself had never heard of it until the discussion of the PD began as nothing more than an idea. It took many email conversations with both Dave and Eric to get a better idea of just how this unit worked. Later I obtained a schematic and have looked at it from time to time. However, I had already decided that if I were to tackle this project, I would use the concept but take a different route on much of the design. That is basically what Dave did.
The fact that the PD suffered from the same type of problem as the old TR, meaning ground mineralization would overwhelm and mask any form of discrimination made sense. Now, also knowing how that problem had been overcome, it only makes sense similar concepts could be used to reduce the ground problems on a PI also.
Personally, I am still working on a different approach for iron ID but have really not spent much time on it lately. I guess I am getting old and lazy. My idea would use a mono coil which is something the PD can't do.
