Don't know about the later Garretts but not long after the GTA 1000 came out I talked to someone at Garrett, probably Jack Lowry as he's the one I talked to except on a couple of occasions when I called them, and was told it auto balanced when it was turned on and the coil swung over the ground a few times, but that it didn't track the ground and wouldn't rebalance unless it was turned off and back on. If what I was told was true, the GTA 1000 basically turns into a preset ground balanced detector after it performs the initial auto ground balance. Whether they balanced like I was told or were preset, the ground balance on the two or three I used was always fine on in the mild ground here.
