Hi Joseph,
I'll toss out three brands getting the most airplay lately - Fisher, Minelab, and White's. There are others but these three all have released a lot of new models lately.
The biggest market is for coin detectors any of which are good for just about anything. But for specific uses specialized detectors can give you an edge. So a detector made specifically to find gold nuggets will have an edge over a detector designed to do everything. So you have to decide just what it is you expect to find with the detector.
One final thing is your budget. People will tend to aim you at high dollar units as the best. And indeed you do get what you pay for. But even todays less expensive machines will blow away anything made 30 years ago. Top end machines are running over a $1000 these days, but if all you can budget for is $200-$300 then rest assured you can get good bang for the buck there these days. The real secret is to dedicate yourself to learning your detector, finding good locations, and putting in the hours.
