Hi Norm,
The main reason I mentioned a comparison of the Martin Grand J12-40E to a recent Taylor twelve is because I think Taylor may have modified its 12-string neck profile when they came out with their NT neck. Your Taylor 855, being a 1992 model, may have a bit of a different neck profile compared to a NT-neck model. Then again, Stutzman has had a used 1992(?) Taylor 855, made in Santee, California, on his wall for about six months that I've auditioned and thought about buying. I don't think the feel of its neck profile is much different than my 2008 Taylor 355ce 12-string.
The Martin Grand J12-40E, being a 40 Series Martin (D-41, D-42, D-45), probably won't show up soon in any guitar shop's inventory for auditioning--although Stutzman just got in a Martin D-41. It's neck looks--on paper anyway--like it'd be easier to play than Martin's 1-7/8" wide D12-28 neck profile.
Folk On!
Ken
