Another type of fingerpick I think I've seen somewhere recently (possibly banjo parts on eBay?) that would enable both fingerpicking up (e.g. Scruggs) and downpicking (e.g. frailing) would be two opposing fingerpicks amalgamated into one - sort of like a thimble with 2 flattened sides.
And for guitar - didn't I read somewhere long ago that Doc Watson filed his thumbpick down to flatpick thickness so that he could do flatpicking runs in fingerpicking songs?
