I have a good friend who has had a D35 for many years and hates to pick leads on it for the same reasons you mention. It sounds quite fine for rhythm and little else. I see no advantage to having a D35. Remember, it was basically invented to use up smaller pieces of rosewood. What advantage does smaller pieces of rosewood have to bigger pieces of rosewood to the player?
The only difference I have ever noticed between the D28 and HD28 is the subtle ornamentation and to me is not sonic. The most versatile to me continues to be a D18 or it's upsell variations because it can play rhythm just fine with as much growl and volume as needed (key word, needed) and can cut through the mix for a lead because of it's midrange and high end superiority. For me, brightness will always win out over muddiness.
This also makes the D18 the soloist's choice.
