Sorry to come late to the thread. If you already bought a guitar, congratulations! The short answer is - buy the one that sounds the best to you.
The rosewood D-28 and HD-28 will have a deeper sound than the mahogany D-18. I have one of each and all three are good guitars. Of the three, though, I would say the HD-28 woud be a better choice as an all around guitar. It certainly has the volume for those rousing strummers, but also has the midrange for nice finger picking. What sets it apart is the forward shifed scalloped bracing. The "regular" D-28 and the D-18 have non-forward shifted, non-scalloped bracing. To my ears, the HD-28 sound better than the D-28.
YOu can't go wrong with any of the three. Go to a store and play all three; then come back the next week and play them again. And bring a friend who will play them while you stand out front and listen.
