So as a non-expert I feel completely qualified to step in here and say something - it's America, after all.
I now own the bottom-end Taylor dread, the 710 (saepele etc), my new HD-28, and my 40 year old D-18.
While I can't agree with Steve on Taylors - I love mine for what I use it for, open tunings with the Elixir strings and it just RINGS in the upper registers and cuts through John B's D-28 so it can be heard when we play together - I agree largely with his Martin comments.
I love love love my new HD-28 and play it all the time. But it's greatest value is strummed; I still prefer the sound of the D-18 for any thing fingerpicked.
The 18 has aged beautifully over the years - but that HD is one beautiful piece of craftsmanship as well.
