There's certainly no reason a long neck banjo can't have a resonator. Rick and Norm mentioned the Deering resonator banjos. Ode offered a resonator on their long necks in the early 1960s. I have one complete with a Lifton hardshell case large enough to accomodate the resonator. The Ode does not have a flange. The resonator just slips over the bracket nuts and is held on by friction.
I suspect resonators are rare among long necks because Pete Seeger's banjo did not have one. I don't use the resonator when playing the Ode because I prefer the sound of the banjo without the resonator. The resonator brightens the sound.
