Yeah, Rick. I think that herringbone is such a nice, subtle, non-blingy treatment, just kinda sets off that BIG OL' DREAD look. But tone wise, I DO prefer the bit lighter touch scalloped bracing enables, but still maintains that traditional Martin "rumble." I know pure-dread, almost nothing beats the D-28! But to me, this is the flip-side of that same coin. I also like the fact the HD's are "boned" (an easy upgrade anyway), and sports the Gotoh brand tuners.
The forward-shifting on the "V" does impart a bit of a different (not superior tho) timbre or tonality. But as Jim told me, as far as the over-all sound of the HD-28, it will "open up" nicely in a coupla years. (IIRC, the "V" has aging-toner, and I for sure prefer the whiter, "non-aged" Sitka. Nature will add her own toner with each passing year.)
