Congrats, Norm, on your first Martin!
Unlike my friends here and elsewhere, I made do with one Martin for forty years - my 1968 D-18 ((I'm not counting the fifteen minutes I owned the lowest end Martid dread, the DX - so un-Martin-like that I gave it away and bought the Taylor 710 to use for open tunings).
My recent purchase (April) of an HD-28 from Jon Garon and My Favorite Guitars was similar to yours in one sense - I figure if I ever retire I won't be dropping $2k on a guitar, and if I ever wanted a rosewood....
I am thoroughly delighted with the HD-28 for the same things mentioned - tone, appearance, and cost. It makes a handsome companion to my D-18, and when I get my digital camera fixed will post a side-by side set of pics - quite striking, what with the 40 years of aging on the 18's (I believe) Adirondack spruce and the blond HD.
Interestingly - I think of the 28 as an adjunct - right now the 18 is sitting 3 feet from me, and it's been out much of the time. For fingerpicking and balance, nothing beats it.
But that HD-28 is the best sounding strummed guitar I have ever heard, fingerpicks well, has action like butter - and you can just sit and stare at its beauty if nothing else.
