Hi Jim,
The HD-28 is the guitar I recommend to everyone if they're looking for a high-end rosewood dreadnought and don't want to spend a fortune to get nice looks and a killer tone. To me, the Martin HD-28 is the rosewood standard dreadnought that stands on its own against any other rosewood dread. Some brands may have a little more oomph here or there--in looks and tone but usually for more bucks--but when all is said and done, no player can go wrong with a HD-28 in their collection or as their only dread.
In this general price range, the HD-28V might be my choice but it costs more and may have some features that some players may not want and this is my basis for recommending the HD-28 Standard Series model.
