Hi Folks,
Sometimes a second look at a new guitar design reveals some possibly strong features that just may endear the design to a goodly number of players willing to give the axe a go. A case in point is Taylor Guitar's new about to be released Taylor 9-String Acoustic-Electric 35th Anniversary Guitar. Being that I've not yet played this guitar (I haven't seen one yet in stores), I can only speculate as to why I may like it. Here are the features that appeal to me on this model:
* Grand Symphony Body Size/Shape for a full tone;
* 1-3/4" Nut Width for ease of playing;
* Nine strings with the D and G strings octavely doubled, and the B string doubled in unison.
What the above features should do is give the guitar a 12-string-like angelic tone while allowing the guitar to have the bass punch and dynamics on the fifth and sixth strings of a 6-string guitar. If the neck profile is the same as a Taylor 6-string guitar's, it should be an easily playable guitar to boot! It just could be that the Taylor 9-String Guitar will put a serious dent in 12-String guitar sales if it pans out the way I think it may with its tone and playability.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the possible tonal characteristics, player-appeal and, thusly, longterm viability of the Taylor 9-String Guitar and/or other 9-string guitars should they eventually be made by other makers as well?
Regards,
Ken
