Sounds like a great show. I guess I forgot Dan had his own "sig" Martin. I have seen him with his "working ax" Martin: it is very "played in," has plenty of scarred wood, and the effects of life on the road and in the studio many years. Oh-the sound is obviously phenomenal on it. IIRC, it's an old D-28 (or maybe a D-18)--either way, it is the proverbial "cannon."
An aside: some here wonder why if all the small builder guitars are so great, you don't see them on stage (well, JT's Olson SJ is). I know a few of these musicians DO have a well-protected "handbuilt" grails they refuse to let on the road, or be abused by roadies. It's one reason you'll see Garth Brooks playing Taks in concert: you can walk into any music store, get one, plug and play.
Meanwhile, if they're recording, they turn to prized instruments that have never seen a spotlight, or a "rainy night in Georgia." Ken and my "pal" Bat McGrath just received his hand-built, double-top w/soundport Woolson in the most gorgeous and subtle "burst" you'll ever see. He ain't gonna be trotting this down to the "Blue Eagle" bar, or some other gig. He WILL be taking immaculate care of it, playing for his own enjoyment, and has plans to get it in the studio ASAP.
FWFW.
