Great topic,
On my new to me dread, the Martins you describe. I like them fine. On my 855 12 I currently have Elixirs. I have ownded this guitar for almost 30 years and have tried many different brands and types. I have not made a final choice but I use the Elixirs for now for several reasons.
1)I don't care for a 12 String that sounds really brassy.
2) The pH of my skin tends to lean toward the acidic and is harsh on strings. Frequent string changes on a 12 are a PTA.
3) The Elixirs seem to stay in tune much better than the others that I used before. A big plus.
4) I use mostly 12 string lights except that I use 0.001 oversize strings on the octave D and G (.013 and .010). This gives a slightly crisper response when played with a thumbpick. When not being played I tune these 2 strings down a bit to relieve the bridge tension from the larger strings. Lets hear it for electronic tuners!
On My Gold Star GF100, GHS medium lights at the moment but still experimenting.
I have a new open back comimg from Deering. I won't know about that one until I have it in hand and have some experience with it.
I use GHS Graphit ALL lube on the nuts of all my instruments. Helps with tuning consistency.
