Hi Sandy,
My banjo is 40+ years old with (what I think is) an Ode neck. The fret board is ebony. It has an all-metal rim/pot, which I have learned to hate with a vengeance, but that's another matter....
A few years ago, I had a luthier install spikes. They worked fine for awhile, but a couple of the spikes have popped out for some reason. Now I'm left with tiny holes in the fret board which may now be just a little too wide to put new spikes in them. Some might question whether the spikes were installed correctly in the first place. I think they were, but that question is surely open to debate.
Bottom line -- I hope to replace this banjo soon, and after researching the various types of 5th string capos, the Shubb will be my choice when the time comes.
Just my US$.02 worth...and please bear in mind that I am, by no means, an expert on banjos.
WB
