I have always enjoyed listening to fingerstyle guitar but have just recently decided to learn it. Much to my chagrin, there are no teachers in my area that I am aware of, so I decided to look around the net to see what I could find on learning fingerstyle.
From the Acoustic Guitar Forum, I learned of a site and after getting there and reading the information, I was interested in the difference between using plastic finger picks and metal finger picks. Before anyone says it doesn't make any difference, the author of the website, www.paulsmithmusic.net/Fingerpicking.html
is very adamant about only using plastic finger picks. I'll paste a portion of his comments:
"When I teach students, and they are just starting to learn finger picking, I encourage them to begin using plastic finger picks right from the start. I personally believe that finger picking an acoustic guitar with plastic finger picks is the BEST (not the easiest) way to learn. I will discuss the reasons for this later down the page. So if you don't have plastic finger picks you will need to get them. I'm not promoting any particular brand, it's basically a matter of preference and doesn't really matter much, but you will need PLASTIC finger picks, not metal. Later I will discuss the reasons for this too. You can get plastic finger picks (if you can find them) at your local music store or you can get some Dunlop finger picks here. If your just beginning to learn finger picking, I highly recommend that you get my Custom picks because as I'll explain, they are helpful for new students. You cannot get these "custom" picks anywhere else but only from this web site because I do them myself, personally. I do this to help new ones in there effort to learn finger picking."
What do you think?? Any response will be appreciated.
Thanks, Bob.
