Hi Rick,
The bad years for Martin were the mid-1970s to early 1980s. During that time Martin guitars had some intonation problems supposedly from worn jigs that caused the cutting of the fingerboard slots for subsequent fret installation to be out-of-location a bit. Also, during the late 1970's, maybe 1978, Martin employees held a strike against the company that went on for, I think, several months, and this may have resulted in some lackluster employee job-performance before the strike--and maybe after it too.
Since about 1985, Martin quality standards have returned to excellence with the Martins of the last decade or so, under the guidance of Chris Martin IV, being very consistent in quality and tone. I think it's hard to find a new Nazareth-made Martin that is bad in any way.
