Joel, All of the D style guitars we are always referring to such as the D18, D28, D35, D41, etc are all part of what's called Martin's Standard Series.
These are really and always have been the stars of the Martin line of guitars. There are off shoots and variations of each and these are always upsells. Such as the D18GE, the HD28, D18 authentic. There are a lot of choices.
I would really suggest you download this pdf file of the Standard Series catalog. http://www.martinguitar.com/catalog/PDF/Standard-Series.pdf
Really, it's a bells and whistles thing. The more you pay, the more features of ornamentation. The D18 and the D28 are the basic Martin. One is mahagony back and sides, the other is rosewood. My preference is the D18, but I like the crisp midrange sound it offers.
As you add features, the models change and the price goes up.
Study it, try them, and go from there. They are all wonderful. Basically, all other full size guitars spawned from these.
