auto attendant msg change

Hi - attempting to configure a DSX-80 - 16ESIU / 8 COIU Box v.01.00.05 w/ 22b handsets.
Have a mental block on changing the attendant msg. Read the previous posts + all manuals and I'm not getting it right.
On extension 300, I press the V-MAIL button on my 22b handset, hear the voicemail prompt, but pressing 72 on the handset brings back - "that is an invalid entry".
#*#* logging in as installer on the 22b handset provides no voice update capability either (but that was a longshot anyway).
What am I missing?
