remote prog via modem

have a ds2000 that works great. voice mail, gate opners, group mail boxes and it even switches video cameras. System is about a year old with 3.21 software. Need to program the system remotely using a modem. Have a US Robotics with the 25 pin plug wired per the manule. Used the same cable from the rs232 port on the system to the 25 pin plug. Using the ds adminstrator prog to call the system via a intercom number. Modem rings and answers, system message says connecting, then it ask for password, input the same as when I call it up using the terminal mode. After about 1 to 2 min the system say's unable to connect. Have tried a number of different settings on the modem but no connection yet.
